First Feeding

Andrew had his first taste of "solid" food yesterday!

I only partially consider this rice cereal to be solid because it's still mostly breast milk.  And (probably because of that) he actually liked it a lot!

We were ready with his arsenal of bibs!  (Don't worry, he just wore one at a time!)

After each bite he would open his mouth and lean toward the spoon for more.

We gave it to him twice, and he didn't finish the bowl either time.  I think he's used to getting his food so much more quickly when he nurses or takes a bottle, so one tiny spoonful at a time got a little frustrating for him I think.  Maybe it'll be a little better as we add less liquid to it.

But I think he did really well, considering it was his first time!

I wasn't planning on starting him on solids until closer to six months, but his pediatrician told us that he's ready to start because of where he is developmentally.  I'm not looking forward to needing to buy or make baby food, but it's still exciting to see how Andrew is growing up!

Our doctor gave us the go ahead at like 4 months, but after doing some research, we decided to wait, and luckily for us, Harrison did not show interest in solids till he was almost 8 months. People will probably disagree with me, but I personally believe that as long as you can breastfeed, than take advantage and avoid solids until 6 months.

Our doctor said that babies are actually more likely to get food allergies if you wait until after 6 months (based on research in the last 2-3 years). But besides that, he was definitely interested in eating off the spoon. If he hadn't shown interest, we would have held off for a while and tried again in a few weeks. I don't know if we'll even give him the rice cereal every day right away- he's definitely still loving nursing.

That's interesting. I haven't read anywhere that it could increase food allergies after six months, only thing I have read about food allergies is the risk when starting them before four months. I know that waiting too long to start solids can cause an aversion to solid foods and iron deficiency [we gave Harrison extra supplements during that time].

Making baby food is much easier than you think though. I would take one Saturday out of the month and make batches of it. Just need ice trays and a blender. I have a baby food book that has some fun and different baby food recipes that H really enjoyed.
